In the Mind of a Murderer
I chose my current English professor because I took her in high school for duel credit and loved her. She is an awesome lady that is super helpful in showing me how to become a better writer and literary critic. I did well in her class then and probably will this semester also. She has a great sense of humor but I'm finding out more and more that she has an odd taste of literature. We have read about 10 stories or so and are currently in a novel. I think at least 8 or 9 of these has been either gruesome, perverted, weird, or contained inuendo. I never expected that before, mainly because we did classic literature before. Needless to say I'm not thrilled with her choice of stories. I find it difficult to choose a topic for my papers and to study for the tests. I guess this is part of the "college experience", but honestly, is it necessary? I think not. The current novel is called "Native Son" by Richard Wright. It is about a black guy in the 40's that kills a white girl and is running from the law. It's a crazy story and we have to read it in big chunks. It is basically the thoughts and feelings of this murder/rapist as it all happens. I read it for about 2 or 3 hours today and the feeling I walked away with was just disgust. Disgust that people live that way. Disgust that anyway has to feel those feelings or think those thoughts. I felt despair because this guy has nothing to live for. Sadness filled my heart. I really dislike this book. I still have a third to read and then a paper to write on it. It is one thing to have to read it, it's entirely different thing when I have to pay attention to detail because we have quizzes and a paper to write about it. My current emotion....disgust.....annoyance.
